D.A. Carson on Miracles

"It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived." Revelation 13:13-14 (ESV)
"This (Rev. 13:13,14) does not mean that there is no such thing as a miracle today. It doesn’t mean either that God can’t do miracles today. What it does mean is that miracles prove nothing today." --DA Carson comments on miracles
Do you think he is right?

I think that miracles must be tested, like everything else, to see if it is Christ exalting and Scripturally sound. Everything must be tested by Scripture. It's not that God isn't still performing miracles; we as Christians need to be able to discern which works are by His hand, and which may be attempting to lead us astray. A miracle alone, as DA Carson said, proves nothing -- until it is tested. Nonbelievers and Christians who are not part of a Bible-teaching church can be easily deceived. Read your Bibles, people!

I concur with Jen, and as well I think I would need to hear the full discussion. As Jen said, we definitely need to be discerning as there are claims to miracles but they must need be tested against the Word to be sure they are of God.

In addition, I guess that I would ask what they are being used to prove--if they are used to prove God exists, one need only look to the sky and realize that God causes the sun to rise each day and how He keeps us breathing to know He does. While I was in Virginia Beach, someone once asked me, when they had heard a story about someone possibly locating Noah's Ark, would people more likely believe in the Bible? My response was that people stood in the midst of Jesus and watched miracles yet did not believe. God uses the Holy Spirit's prompting to move in the heart of someone to open their eyes to what they are seeing.

I agree with Jen, although I do believe that if it truly a mircale from the Lord, then it DOES mean something and we should be wise to heed it. I also believe we all have miracles in our lives by God's grace, although we often do not call it that. Just the fact that God has called some of us and drawn us to Himself is a miracle. How our body works is a miracle.
